A Japanese Gem in Cremorne@Toshiya

Toshiya, a quaint Japanese restaurant in the heart of Cremone, on Military Road. This restaurant is very popular with the locals, be sure to make a booking. The restaurant is dimly lit giving an intimate feel and has the friendly, attentive Japanese service we love.

The menu is exciting with a mixture of fusion and traditional dishes, all presented like works of art. The drink menu has plenty of options including local and Japanese with beer, wine sake and umeshu. The Yuzu Umeshu is a favourite, nice and refreshing – this place makes their own. Depending on how you feel, you can order ala carte or a banquet which allows you to sample more of the menu. The special Christmas and New Years Banquet for $49 is amazing value with a number small bites full of flavour which having your taste buds lighting up like a christmas tree.

We ordered a couple of items from the specials menu and shared the banquet. There were a few options on the specials that stood out, in particular the seared salmon sushi with thinly sliced prosciutto. A fusion dish with great flavour combinations. The delicate 40 degrees slow cooked salmon with saikyo miso was art on a plate. The plate decorated with sauce smears of sweet miso, chilli mayo, soy as well as a parsley walnut sauce.

The banquet was impressive, starting with the usual edamame. It got way more exciting from there, next came the Salmon Carpaccio with truffle oil, Sashimi tacos, Grilled scallop, soft shell crab and duck dumpling; all nicely plated with well thought out flavour and texture combinations. All of these dishes were visually appealing and so tasty.

This was followed by some larger dishes including a creative sushi plate which comprised of an aburi seared salmon roll and a tempura scallop roll which was coated in a tempura batter.

Next was a choice of Fish or Meat. The options being teriyaki grilled fish or wagyu beef or Pari Pari Chicken. We went with a tasty  dish we haven’t tried before and sparked our interest, the pari pari chicken. This dish is a large spring roll pastry parcel filled with succulent chicken, vegetables, tartare sauce and melted cheese. I absolutely loved this.

Although full and satisfie, we manged to fit in the dessert which was a choice of red bean, sesame or green tea ice cream. This was a nice way to finish the meal.

No wonder this place is so popular, great food, service and value. Thanks for having us and we’ll definafely be back again.
