Sunset Cinema is an outdoor cinema experience, hosted in Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Wollongong and North Sydney. It is a movie experience where you can take a picnic blanket, pack some food and gather your friends and family to enjoy your movie outdoors under the stars.
We visited the North Sydney location and the movie is held on North Sydney Oval at the intersection of Miller Street & Ridge Street. You feel like a part of history as you admire the beautiful stands around the cricket oval and gaze up into the stars. It is such a lovely location for the evening movie.
Tickets are $20.00 and gates open at 7pm and we recommend arriving right on time to secure your perfect viewing spot. Take a blanket, a low lying outdoor chair or hire a bean bag and make yourselves comfortable. Pack yourselves a picnic dinner (you can’t BYO) and enjoy your dinner whilst you wait for the sun to go down and the movie to start.
If you’re feeling like spending a little more, $40.00 will get you a space on the ‘lounge lawn’ where your bean bag is set up and this includes the film, some popcorn and a drink. This is what we experienced on the night. A great viewing spot and certainly very comfortable.
There’s a couple of food and drink tent, one selling lollies, chocolate and Cobbs’ popcorn – we tried the movie style buttered popcorn and the regular sea salt and we polished this off fairly early into the movie.
Drinks wise they sell wine and prosecco by the glass or bottle. We had the MadFish Prosecco and Sav Blanc. They also have 4 pines beers which we selected, as well as Bickford’s traditional soda’s and juices by Presha Fruit Juice – I loved the Pink lady one!
There’s also a number of food items prepared by ‘The Greens’ such as a Beef brisket & crispy onion baguette, Prawn brioche roll, Poached chicken (or haloumi) salad or Cheese plate or Dessert plate to finish. We had taken our own food so didn’t try these, but they looked the perfect type of food for this sort of event.
As the sun set, the ads started playing and we made ourselves comfortable. We were watching ‘Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri’. Despite its annoying ‘no official’ solution to the story, it was a film with outstanding actors and a healthy dose of black comedy. We enjoyed the movie and the overall experience.
