A township located in Pingtung County, south Taiwan. It is about 2.5 hours from
Kaoshuing. We visited the town whilst staying in Nanwan. It is the gateway to Kenting National Park.
The town is quite historic, built over 130 years ago and remains still survive of the old town. 13 m high city walls are still there.
Where to visit
Siaodu’s Steamed Buns
No. 20, Henggong Road, Hengchun Township, Pingtung County, 946
We found this on google and wanted to visit and try their themed steamed buns. Unfortunately on the day they only had the colourful knot one, but it did taste very good! We also tried the steak and onion steamed bun which was super tasty. They also have plenty of flavours including less traditional like bacon and cheese or meatball.
Here 149 cafe
No. 14, Lane 41, Shengbei Road, Hengchun Township, Pingtung County, 946
We found this cafe via google and it was a roaster selling filter, syphon, milk based coffees and well as cold brew. We enjoyed a breakfast here of scrambled eggs, fruits and charcoal toast. Staff were eager to please.
Paradise of Deer
No. 1097-1, Henggong Road, Hengchun Township, Pingtung County
An amazing deer sanctuary where you can get up close to the deer. It costs $300 TWD to enter and your ticket entitles you to have some food for the deer. You can feed them and they are super friendly. There’s a cafe and gift shop on site too.
Hengchun Brewseum 3000
946, Pingtung County, Hengchun Township, Caobu Road, 29-1號恆春3000啤酒博物館
We were lucky to stumble across this place whilst looking at google maps. It’s in an industrial area and off the main city strip so you wouldn’t know it was there.
Chung Wen-ching (鍾文清) is the founder of Hengchun 3000 Brewseum and we were lucky enough to meet him and learn about the craft beers on tap.
This place is a brewery/museum or a “brewseum” as it is called. The first wall which greets you showcases a timeline of beer through art from ancient Egypt through to Mesopotamia to today.
The piece de resistance is a gigantic artwork made from 3000 beer mugs and glasses which line the two-story high steel wall of the tasting hall.
At the end of the room is another, a mosaic artwork made from beer stickers.
We then tried a tasting paddle (or more like a chandelier), for $350 TWD
Hengchun Old Street
946, Pingtung County, Hengchun Township, Fude Road, 中山路 Hengchun Old Street
The old town is certainly worth walking around. The city has an historic city gate in the centre of a roundabout and also other city gates and ruins reflective of their heritage. Grab a map and walk around because you can find plenty of interesting sites, shops and eateries.
A great spot we came across whilst walking through old town. Made from natural rubber, you can select your own base, straps and colour. More comfortable and apparently last longer than your typical Aussie thong. The best thing about this was that it was fun – you have the opportunity to punch / make your own thong, on a modified skateboard workstation.
Spoon in pocket
We visited here for a coffee whilst visiting Old town. It’s a quaint little shop serving up coffee, cakes, pastas, burgers and waffles.
946, Pingtung County, Hengchun Township, Zhongshan Road, 149號嗜。咖啡 Addicted to Café
We didn’t get a chance to visit here, but it came recommend as the place to get coffee
946, Pingtung County, Hengchun Township, Xiaonan Road, 151號賀HeR巷內食間
We were recommended to go here by the owner of Step Up. Make sure to look it up on google maps, down a small alley you will find this place selling traditional steamed bun burgers. We tried steamed grilled pumpkin bun topped with a pork patty, fried egg, mayonnaise, pepper and an add on of cheese for $60 TWD, approximately $3 AUD. Soft bun, good toppings and nice flavour. Keep in mind it’s a minimum order of $60 TWD and all dining members must buy. Restaurant is filled with 1980’s nostalgia decor.
Grand Bay Resort
94643, Pingtung County, Hengchun Township, Henggong Road, 998號墾丁怡灣渡假酒店
We found this hotel in Hengchun and would have stayed here had we not already booked somewhere by the time we found it. A flashy hotel with a restaurant, indoor pool and fitness centre. What is amazing is all the fun activities you can do inside! We were not staying, but the lovely staff allowed us to use the indoor clear walkway and slide for the 8th floor to the 3rd floor. It was super fun! They also have a climbing wall and ball pit. Would be an awesome place to stay. Thank you to the staff for their hospitality, also arranging a taxi for us.
