As an ancient history teacher, I’ve long been teaching about the rise and fall of ancient empires, creation of settlements and development of societies and civilisations and the marvellous artistic, cultural and architectural feats. I’ve taught about the incredible artefacts and what I consider the most important discovery of all time, the Rosetta Stone. To see this, and the remarkable artefacts in the British Museum was incredible.
The sheer amount of artefacts in size and quality is just astounding. There’s things from Greece, Mesopotamia, Babylon, China, Japan, England and Egypt to name a few.
Now, I will comment that many of these pieces are the lost cultural legacy of another and obviously taken by Britain at the time which poses a challenge to original owners. That said, we can learn a lot about them, and they’re protected well in this museum.
It is free, but sure to “get a ticket” online for an entrance exam time or you will be waiting over 30 minutes to get a walk up through the back door. There’s a few lifts (and with a wait), it is accessible, but very very busy. Lots of tourists, school groups and hard to really see everything unless you’re there a whole day.
It’s a must do, if travelling to England.
