Anyone who has been to Portugal knows they have some of the best pastries going around. So you have this in mind when you hear of a shop selling a Portuguese tarts and make it a mission to visit. Tuga js home of the famous Portuguese tart or Pastel de nata!

It is their signature item, developed in Lisboa Portugal in 1837. Gus Ferreira became a pastry chef, leaving Portugal for Australia and opening a Portuguese cake shop in Curlewis Street, Bondi in 1994. Today, Gus’ son Diego has kept up the legacy as head baker, making and selling these out of this shop now in Bronte. The little shop on Clovelly Road has become famous for these delightful pastries and a number of other amazing and decadent treats. Working nearby, I frequent the store quite often.

We were pleased that Tuga opened another outlet in Alexandria, nearer to our home. This store is much larger and also does specialty roasted single origin coffee. The cabinet displays all their incredible pastries, from almond and Nutella croissants to danishes and my favourite, the fluffy cinnamon donut.

We of course also had the famous Pastel de Nata, a beautiful flaky pastry with a sweet, egg custard centre and dusted with cinnamon. These are the best around.

The store also has savoury options and we found their vegetarian focaccia to be super tasty and a good sized portion too. There’s pies, quiche, breads and more. You will find it difficult to choose since it’s all incredible!

Add to your must visit list and check it out soon.
