Nanwan, or South Bay In Kenting National Park is only about 10 mins bus ride from Hengchun. It’s located on the beach where you can swim, surf, hire a quad bike or simply have a drink in one of the bars by the sea. We thought this was a great place to stay, low key and relaxing.
Where to stay
There’s plenty of little BnB’s in Nanwan that are super cute and some larger resorts in the broader area of Kenting. Do your research and find your preference.
Coral Reef BnB
卡樂莉芙 126 巷 號, No. 3, Nanwan Road, Hengchun Township, Pingtung County, 946
Great location, right at the beach. There is a 7 eleven out the front and a bus stop right outside. There’s a few restaurants on the strip too or it’s a 5 min bus ride to Kenting.
The rooms are big, Super clean and ocean views. All the amenities needed in the room and plenty of room to dry clothes. I found the hotel to focus on cleanliness.
We like that they had a spot for your shoes to wash off sand and a washing machine you could use for free.
Staff don’t know much English but did their best to help. We really appreciate changing our dates of stay even though we’d booked non cancellation.
A Fei Surf Inn II – Tiki House
No.268, Nanwan Rd, Kenting, Pingtung County, 268
This hostel is a good option for surfers to stay, they have a surf shop and rent out boards and also sell surf lessons.
Where to eat
Piccolo Polpo Italian Restaurant
No. 60號, Nanwan Road, Hengchun Township, Pingtung County, 946
This is a pretty international looking restaurant and quite sophisticated in its presentation and decor. We were lucky to get a table as each day it was very busy.
The food here is outstanding. Seafood based but they do have some other dishes too. We absolutely loved the prosciutto wrapped scallops, cuttlefish with smoked paprika aioli and lobster with flatbread. The best dish hands down was the confit duck with a truffle and mushroom risotto. This restaurant is an absolute MUST visit. Our meal set us back $100 AUD.
No, No. 100, Nanwan Road, Hengchun Township, Pingtung County, 946
We didn’t go here but it was recommended for good pizza and beers. One of the four restaurants on the strip at Nanwan.
Kenting Night Market
Hundreds of people walk down the 2 km strip lined with street stalls selling a wide range of food. Skewered meats and seafood, abaolone, grilled prawns, grilled Wagyu, stinky tofu, octopus balls, grilled vegetables, hot pots and more.
It’s a fun atmosphere and some stalls are selling cocktails and shots for those who want to drink. There’s games like pinball, bursting balloons with darts, ring toss and more to keep the kids (and even adults entertained) and you can win prizes! The shops on the strip are open if you’d prefer to eat in, or buy some memorabilia / gifts or get a massage.
We were staying in Nanwan so got a 5 min bus ride for $25 TWD.
It’s easy to get between Kenting and Nanwan on the bus, either 9117 or 9188. For $50 TWD, it’s a good option go find more food and the markets in Kenting.
There’s a police station in Kenting which we used because we lost a wallet and they were super helpful in helping us find it.
You can’t take surfboards on trains and buses so unless you’re flying (to Kaoshuing) and hiring a private vehicle, you’ll need to hire a board. They won’t loan them if the red flags are up.
Take cash because lots of places don’t accept cards. Make sure to have lots of coins ready for use on the bus.
How to get there!
You will need to travel there from Kaoshuing station via a bus or train and bus.
Take train to Kaohsiung Railway Station, and then the bus.
Take train to Pingtung Railway Station, and then take Pingtung Bus.
We got the train from Taitung ourselves to Fanglio and then the 9188 bus to Kenting via Hengchun and Nanwan.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have.
