Where cafe meets craft

The Press Shop is locates inside a Bespoke letterpress shop in the stunning town of Bowral in the Southern Highlands.

Locally owned, they source and prepare quality food and focus on using small farmers, producers and local supplies in order to best highlight what the Southern Highlands region has to offer. With fruits and vegetables from Moonacres farm, Piccolo Farm, Highlands organics, Brillig Farm, Living Earth Farm to name a few. There’s truffles from Robertson truffles, olive oil from white chapel grove, mushrooms from Li-Sun, meats from maugers and Robertson village butchery, eggs from Taulca Park, honey from the Honey Collector, this café really shows respect to their local area.

Head chef Nathan West has put together a delightful menu using these fine ingredients, and the meals tasted so fresh and were absolutely beautifully presented on the plate.

Lunch is served from 12 – 3pm. As we were in a group, we were able to sample a few of the menu items. We would describe this as simple food, done in a very elegant way, showcasing the skills and vision of an inspired chef.

The Waffles were served at a nice lunch size, not overbearing like many cafés these days. Topped with a refreshing coconut sorbet, peaches, mint and a white chocolate crumble. This dish is vegan and dairy free.

The local greens frittata was laid beautifully on the plate atop a goats curd and decorated with herbs and lovely thin slices of potato crisp.

The potato gnocchi was incredible. Served with new season tomatoes, roast onion puree, vino cotto and herbs, this dish is perfect for everyone, including vegetarian and vegan diners.

Something more filling and very approachable is the Taluca Pork free range Cuban Sandwich with pickles. Fresh bread, great meat and served cut in half with cheese and a side of cucumber and herbs.

There’s also a roasted carrot dish, zucchini salad, beef brisket sandwich, eggs benedict and even a kiddies menu. I’m presuming this menu would change seasonally.

Drinks wise, the coffee was great too. Speciality coffee, using beans from Cultivar, who source these from Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Costa Rica. You can have a regular milk based coffee, filter coffee, or a flavoured one like turmeric, matcha, velvet (beetroot) or a hot choc. Organic teas, wild-grown herbal teas, house made iced tea, kobmucha and milkshakes are also on the menu.

At the back of the café is a beautiful letter press shop selling handcrafted papers, cards and other lovely gifts. You can also see the letterpress machines and can understand the work that goes into making products of this quality in the old fashioned way. It’s lovely to see them preserving this century old art form.

Come for a few meals, coffee and leave with a satisfied belly and a few handicraft purchases.

Healthy food and store @ Hills Organics

Hills Organics is a cafe inside an organic food store. As soon as you walk in you can’t help but go straight to the shelves and have a peek at all the various healthy products in the store.

After we’d finished browsing the shelves, we sat down and had a look at the menu. Everything sounded so inviting.

We decided to go for the Keto Breakfast Plate as we were quite interested to try the keto bread. This dish was (gf,df) and consisted of an in-house made macadamia keto bread (gf). avocado, kaleonaise sauce, organic mixed salad leaves, smoked salmon, cashew cheese and organic poached eggs. The bread and the cashew cheese was super tasty!

The sunshine bowl was very refreshing and was served in a cute coconut bowl which made us feel like we had escaped to somewhere tropical for a bit.

Staff were very friendly and looked like they enjoy working there which could be because it is operated like a family orientated business. Overall a good vibe and lots of wholesome goodness to enjoy. Although it is located in a business area, the atmosphere is so relaxed you don’t even realise that it is.

Another thing to note is that if you’re into all things healthy and organic, you most likely won’t leave this place without a thing or two. We ended up getting some Kombucha and a few protein snacks for the road.

Making a Christmas Wreath

When it comes to Christmas time and decorating your home, it’s always nice to have that special homemade touch. That couldn’t be more true for a Christmas Wreath to adorn your front door, showing a gesture of welcoming vibes to guests as they visit.

Making your own Christmas Wreath can be an inexpensive activity so it’s great for your friends and family to do together.

Firstly, get that everyday item, a coat hanger. Stretch it and you have yourself a frame.

3DAE93CE-3D01-4474-9556-BE7E968E61A9

Secondly, cover the frame with bundles of greenery and wrap a small piece of regular home twine in a few spots to secure it.

B87AD0AA-69D2-4A82-B892-95E039539380

Then, make sure you have an array of different greenery and arrange a pattern or style before you place it on.

AF7D7E03-E98E-4E74-9D16-5C82AF7084A2

Secure your greenery with small pieces of wire and secure it behind the wreath. Overlap each previous piece with the next.

F60F397F-D200-4A36-BA90-4FF0AF890055

Raid your garden or find a friendly neighbour, or purchase a bunch of flowers you can use to decorate it. Wreaths can be packed with greenery, natives, fresh flowers or even if you would prefer, Christmas decorations and holly also are suitable. You can decorate it all round, off centre or just at the bottom, it’s all down to personal preference.

You’ve then got the top of the coathanger to hang the wreath on the front door! Enjoy making!

Sudio Headphones – wireless, compact and tangle free! Perfect for a Christmas gift too!

We’ve been using the Sudio headphones for a while now, specifically the Bluetooth wireless model. They are light, stylish and come in a variety of colours. Swedish design and handmade details. Our first purchase was the white pair and we used these whilst travelling all across North and South America. They are super small and pack down into their case for each transporting and tangle free. They charge quickly and have 3.5 hours battery life. I often use these for the gym too, and having no wires means I can’t get caught up in the cord like I’ve been known to do.

IMG_0805

We’ve updated our pair with the new release of the Vasa Bla. Wow! We’ve tested them out recently and whilst we loved our first pair, these are even better. We have black/gold style but there’s a variety of colours to select from from white to green and even baby pink.

They also have a new product – Nivå. As the name probably highlights, Sudio are of Swedish origin. These are noise cancelling and with a microphone and Siri voice control!

If you prefer larger models, they also sell regent headphones with designer caps, colours of which can be changed. Check out their website for further details.

Easy Treats & Health Boosts:  Molecular technologies have greatly advanced our understanding of the complexity and diversity of  gut (health or) microbial communities in individuals. New bodies of research are rippling through the fitness industry on the topic.   Diet, particularly macronutrients, play a major role in shaping the composition of these complex populations. Though long term effects of a high protein diet or high fat diet are less well defined, we do know your gut health composition is altered when making such extreme changes to your food intake.  This can affect the way you absorb nutrients, digest fibre, affect post training recovery and the strength of your immune system.  This in turn can predispose or trigger genetic or environmental influenced health conditions.  SET THE BAR has created a range of healthy snacks based on such research.  Their EnerGi bars are designed to replenish the probiotics imbalance from excessive changes to diet, are low GI, protecting you from sudden spikes in your glucose and improving digestion, providing a low carb alternative and prevent diabetes among other benefits.

Supplementing your training:   How does one begin to navigated the modern day complexity of whey, soy, egg, milk, pea and hemp proteins?  What is good for you?   We suggest why for muscle building, something without BCAAs (branched chain amino acids) for weight loss.  Vegetarian, vegan, diabetes, kidney disease and gastrointestinal conditions would warrant non-milk, no-added sugar, low-range protein content and lactose sugar / sweetener or gluten based proteins respectively would generally be the right choice.

PokitPal app for consumer discount

So, it’s Friday night and you want to eat out, yet you can’t decide where to go. If you’re like us, you’ll scroll the internet for hours before finally deciding. The PokitPal app has made it easier for us to decide, narrowing the choice down to a list of bars and restaurants offering us a discount whilst we dine!! That is, cash back for your meal!

For the restuarant itself, the PokitPal brand offers participating venues a way incentivise patrons by offering a cash back when dining/visiting the bar. It’s great for business to see their customers get a discount or cash back by using the app. When choosing where to dine, customers may select the business due to the incentive offered.

As a customer, all you need to do is download the free app, upload your mastercard details to your app. You can then search through the app, and choose where to drink and eat. The cash-back percentage varies from venue to venue and is usually around 5-15%. Once you’ve dined and paid, you will notice that percentage has been refunded to your card. It’s an awesome idea tome.

We’ve now dined at three venues via the app, each offering 15% cash back. After we paid using our mastercard, we were later refunded that percentage to our credit card. It was refunded almost intstantaneoulsy. So, it’s a win win situation!

There’s a great range of participating venues, and we selected a great bistro style menu at Mordeo in the Sydney CBD. Full list of venues below.

Mordeo

Mordeo. It could be described as a hidden gem, being holed in between some city high rise work buildings off Philip St in the Sydney CBD. However their name is obviously out there and known in the city community, as it was pumping with crowds enjoying a few after work drinks and what looked like an incredible Espresso Martini. They also brew their own beer.

Peppercorn at Civic

Peppercorn restaurant is situated upstairs of the suave Civic hotel, close to World Square and Thai Town. We visited on a Friday night, the restaurant had a great atmosphere and was a hive of activity, with many groups enjoying a meal. The restaurant is described as Thai, however having recently visited Laos, we noted many of the dishes having Laotian influence, which is not too dissimilar given the Geographic location.

Lil Darlin

Lil Darlin, in Randwick, Darlinghurst and Surry hills is great for a few drinks for a party, hens or just a quiet catch up with friends. They have a great cockail menu and also host cocktail masterclasses. They also have a great bar menu: from entree style bites to pizzas, pastas and schnitzel to name a few.
