SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET

How I love a good musical. My first ever musical to see was Phantom of the Opera starring premier superstar Anthony Warlow. When I heard he was appearing in Sweeney Todd, I was there in a heartbeat. That incredible deep voice and control of the stage is so engaging. Warlow plays the demon barber Sweeney Todd.

He is supported by the incomparable Gina Riley (famous for playing “Kim” in Kath and Kim) she holds her own on stage as the Pie shop owner Mrs Lovatt.

Prior to seeing this musical, I did not know the story of Sweeney Todd at all, I hadn’t even seen the Johnny Depp film. But boy I’m glad I went. It is so interesting and certainly kept us on the edge of our seat.

Set in 19th century London, the two main characters come into each other’s realms when Todd lives and works above Mrs Lovett’s pie shop after returning from exile. The plot builds from here as Todd exacts revenge on those who wronged him. The plot is deep, dark and twisted with a bit of dark comedy here and there.

I loved how the the orchestra pit was partly above ground so you could see them perform, led by Musical Director, Vanessa Scammel.
