Comeco foods @ Newtown

Comeco means “rice flour” in Japanese, completely fitting since this cafe serving sushi and doughnuts that are all vegan, gluten and dairy free, and made with all natural ingredients.

The business was started by Yu Ozone and her husband Masa Haga in 2017, after running stalls in Marrickville. They do still operate at Sydney’s Vegan Market, in addition to the cafe in Newtown.

Serving a wide range of their popular “sourdoughnuts”, made using a sourdough that has been fermented for 48 hours using gluten-free sourdough, coming from organic brown rice flour and bran. Flavours include traditional cinnamon, glazed, strawberry, chocolate, salted caramel, chocolate custard, matcha custard, coffee custard, passionfruit custard, adzuki red bean, strewed apple cinnamon and all doughnuts are made to order.

They also have great vegan sushi with a range of options such as Jalapeno & Eggplant Chili roll, Aburi Eggplant Teriyaki Roll, Organic Vegan Schnitzel & Karashi Roll, Mushroom Tempura Chilli Roll, Okra & Pumpkin Roll with Organic Plum Sauce and smoky BBQ Miso Roll. They also have Japanese katsu curry and Onigiri platters during the week.

We got one of their Onigiri platters takeaway, which came with two Onigiri, sweet potato, salad, lotus root chips, Japanese falafel and miso. We also ordered two extra Onigiri. They are so tasty and we look forward to ordering again!

Drink wise, there’s Single O coffee, organic matcha and black sesame lattes.

There’s a few seats to eat in, and it’s a casual space with friendly staff and efficient service, our meal taking just 15 mins to prepare.
