The Lion and Buffalo

I drive past Lion and Buffalo all the time and it always looks inviting with its bright murals. This established cafe is always popular, and for good reason – food, coffee and atmosphere is great!

There’s plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and it’s also dog friendly. If you’re seated inside, you’ll note the cool murals and neon art, keeping the cafe fun.

Staff are also on keeping with this attitude, and they’re all friendly, welcoming and efficient in serving us, taking our order promptly and engaging in conversation.

We begin with a coffee and agree that it is excellent. Using single o for their bean, it’s a smooth drink and we enjoy it as a macchiato and a flat white.

There’s also flowering teas, juices, beer and wine. If you’re just in for something small, grab one of their many cakes like carrot cake or brownies or you will love their fun little gingerbread cookies!

In regards to the food, we love when a cafe offers beyond a traditional menu, and that’s certainly something you’ll find at The Lion and Buffalo. The Ottoman Eggs with harissa fried chickpeas, grilled eggplant, tahini yoghurt, spiced brown butter & Iggy’s sourdough or perhaps their black opal wagyu steak sandwich is calling your name.

We opted for “Better than Sex” Ramen; made with a flavourful broth (that you can have chili if you so please), with a soy infused egg, nori, grilled pork chashu, black fungus and heaps of Hakata style noodles and topped with shallots and bean sprouts. It is honestly one of the best ramens we’ve had! So filling too.

The L&B lox is so good too, it comes served like a deconstructed bagel with all the bits and pieces to make up as you please – a decent serve of house cured miso salmon, cream cheese, turmeric zucchini, fennel, pickled beetroots & NYC bagel and we added a poached egg! Fresh, healthy, super tasty and filling. It looks stunning too.

A gorgeous place to have brunch in South Coogee, so take our recommendation and visit soon!
