Just what Sydney always needed, and a viking whisky bar come restaurant appears. Mjolner is one of the coolest openings of 2017. Situated on Cleveland St on the border of Surry Hills and Redfern, the bar is a little hard to find. Keep an eye out for the over 18 sign. Walk down some stairs into another realm, filled with hearty food, reminiscent of the Viking period and one of Sydney’s most comprehensive and diverse whisky lists. The space itself is like is classily set up, with Viking weaponry adorning the walls and we cannot forget Thor’s Hammer decanter taking pride of place at the bar. What a showpiece!

The whisky list at Mjolner is ridiculous, it is not a list, it is literally a catalogue of whisky to sample. It would take an age and a small bank to try them all. Mjolner serve a range of other drinks including some amazing cocktails too.

We stopped in for their tasting paddle. Amazing value at $40 for four drams, a beautiful whisky cocktail and a side of matching whisky cured meats.

We also shared some small bites. The cutlery and crockery as impressive as the restaurant, with many of the pieces especially commissioned for Mjolner. Note to restaurant visitors – don’t steal their cutlery and glassware or there will be no bar left!

The octopus was cooked to perfection, very flavoursome and super tender, not much give at all. We also shared a cheese plate, served with pickles, the presentation was rustic in appearance keeping with the Viking theme. Their cheese plate perfect to sample with some whiskies.

It was a great all round experience visiting Mjolner. Definitely on the list for a return visit. Next time we will sit in for a group dining experience.
