Little Hutong, known in Chinese for a narrow lane or alleyway in a Chinese city. These little lanes are where many a good meal can be found, and whilst you don’t find a laneway here, you will find good food. Little Hutong is a suburban gem which has been feeding the people of Little Bay for a number of years. The restaurant occupies a large modern space with an industrial feel. There is a splash of colour provided by the portrait oil painting of girl eating noodles, featuring one the owners daughters.
The menu channels South and East Asian flavours and cooking techniques, with many menu items from different originating countries including Malaysia and its cuisine hub Penang, or exotic flavours of Bali in Indonesia or simply refined Japanese recepies and many more. Little Hutong sources fresh local ingredients to bring you their best version of each dish.
We start off snacking on the Japanese inspired Panko crumbled chicken, delicious little chicken pieces to dip into the silky Japanese mayo.
We pick off some Nalaysian Nyona Top hats, otherwise known as Tai Pee. These bite sized fried wonton cups are filled with flavour provided by a mix of ingredients; carrots, prawn, crab meat and egg omelette, topped with coriander chilli and roe.
Something to warm us on a cold winter nigh was a classic Chinese inspired fresh made wonton soup with bok Choi. This was accompanied by a salt and pepper Squid served in a lettuce cup topped with sauteed onion and chilli, the squid having a soft texture and a good amount of spice.
The menu is filled with comfort food such as a soulful claypot cooked chicken with Chinese sausage. The claypot and its cooking method intensifies the flavours of the dish.
The Little Hutong version of Mee siam of work fried vermicelli noodles with with prawns, bean sprouts and rolled egg omelette and a side kick of Spicy sambal to be added to taste, if you can handle the heat.
We finished the meal with the sweet and super crispy Banana fritters, served with a chocolate crumb and vanilla ice cream. So good we couldn’t stop, we kept going back for more. Little Hutong always provides excitement through their variety of quality menu items, from many different Asian countries.
