Glendronach 1993 26 year old Australian exclusive by TWL

1993 gave Gen X a few moments of reference; Shane Warne delivered the ball of the century to Mike Gatting, The Wu-Tang Clan released their album, Enter The Wu Tang (36 Chambers), and Michael Jordan retired for the first time. But since this is a whisky write up, we’ll focus on when Glendronach laid down cask number 392 in a first fill Olorosso Sherry Cask. 26 years later it’s 2019 and the Master blender at Glendronach Dr Rachel Barry hand selected a number of exceptional single casks to be released, this includes cask 392, filling 659 bottles at 51%.

The crew from The Whisky List, working with Glendronach have made a monumental impact for Australians who appreciate fine whisky, by releasing this outstanding single cask exclusively for the Australian market.

Dr Barrie’s tasting notes include an appearance of Hazelnut in colour, a nose of strawberry preserve, burnt orange zest, sandalwood and honeycomb and a palate consisting of red liquorice orange zest, Oloroso, pepped apple and bramble. The finish is long, warming, and lingering. The mouth is left to cope with wave after wave of warming richness with layers of sweetness and spice to this whisky. Give this whisky time to open up and you will see it transform while you taste.

For our own spin on things; the colour is light caramel, just starting to turn. At first, it smells amazingly sweet and reminds me of a visit to a candy store and cherry cola or those large coke bottle lollies. It then is that mandarin fragrance you get when peeling the fruit and pancakes with maple syrup. Tasting is a little dry at first, then the sweetness kicks in, the sherry olorosso of course, cherry cola just like on the nose, notable pepper spice giving an ongoing warmth on the back palate, the flavour lingers and lasts. Once finished, I continue to nose the empty glass wishing it would refill.
