Nam 2 in Green Square is a new venture for the team from Mr Nam in Mascot. This is a more upscale restaurant in an Art Deco-styled space in Zetland. It feels classy and sophisticated yet comfortable.
Nicely styled with green leather couches, wood grain and marble. They’ve certainly gone all out for the decor. You can also dine outside with heaters to keep you warm in winter.
The menu is South-east Asian with plenty of Thai and Vietnamese influences. We loved all the dishes as they were packed with flavour and a good amount of spice. The scallops in the shell with home made xo sauce were a great start and set us up for a fabulous dinner.
We also tried some crunchy school prawns bites served atop wild rice puffs and some Sriracha mayo to dip in. The lime pink salt fried chicken wings with a tamarind sweet sauce were also a great snack to have with a drink or two.
Speaking of which, the drinks here are excellent. There’s alcohol in the form of cocktails, beer and wine as well as mocktails or iced drinks for those not keen on an alcoholic beverage. We loved the lychee mojito and the grapefruit lychee martini was the favourite; the perfect amount of sweetness and freshness.
A big plate of lettuce and vermicelli came with the sliced coconut bbq chicken and a little pot of nam Jim relish. This is right up our alley, being fresh, healthy and filling.
One of our favourites was the the Prawn and Squid Salad, served atop a plate of glass noodles. The seafood was clean and fresh and flavoured with a thai citrus dressing. We are keen to return and have this again!
You should order yourself a rice dish too to accompany your mains and mop up that extra sauce. We enjoyed one of their specialties; Nam’s Fried Rice, a generous bowl of rice with brown butter mixed with spanner crab, salted egg flakes and topped with egg roe.
To end the savoury meals, we were recommended to try a hot pot. We shared the ocean pot, a bubbling bowl filled with spicy tangy and sour tom yum soup which was filled with premium seafood, including fish, scallops, squid and mussels. It also had veggies including mushroom and some glass noodles too. We love that the broth got richer as it started to boil. Definately one to share; for the size is reasonable.
We ended with some dessert, a sticky rice sago served in a bamboo cane with a coconut sauce and coconut gelato and a crunchy nut soil.
Such a great spot for a creative and inspired Asian influenced restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed all the food here and look forward to returning.
In addition, we felt welcome and comfortable, for the service was super friendly and efficient and we thoroughly recommend a visit.
Look out for first table as I note a 50% off deal for 5:30 bookings at the moment.
