Happyfield @ Haberfield

We’d been following the Happyfield Instagram from it’s inception, hanging for it to open. So had everyone else, clearly, for the café is always exceptionally busy. We took a cold morning as the opportunity to head to the café in hope of a shorter wait.

We arrive around 9:15am and put our name down and stroll the streets until our phone number is called. We enter the café, located on the corner of Ramsay and Dalhousie Street in Haberfield. It reminds us of an American style bistro with tables such that you’d find in a diner, with stools, booths and fold out menus. The space sees a retro look, exposed brick walls and yellow tones to its decor.

The cafe has been developed by Chris Theodosi – front of house, who is super friendly and welcoming, ensuring a smooth operation is taking place with Jesse Orleans – chef, who hails from Canada. This may explain the pancake stack which is a key feature of their menu. You can order a stack of panckaes, ranging from 3 – 15 depending on your level of hunger. These come with Pepe Saya butter and maple Syrup.

You can otherwise (or also) order their savoury stack with two sunny side up fried eggs and crispy bacon in addition to the butter and maple. Their sweet stack came with charred Banana, seasonal fruit, whipped cream and maple syrup. We love the pancakes. These days, too many cafes are going crazy with over the top flavours and fillings, but this café sells your traditional style – light and fluffy and they will have you wishing your ordered a bigger stack.

We also order the McLovin Muffin and it is unreal – an English muffin stuffed with 2 chicken patties, fluffy folded eggs, American Cheese, Chipotle Mayo and Chicken and herb salt. Seriously this is the best!

We ordered this as part of the “off the menu” meal called the “happiest meal” – a platter with the muffin, 3 pancakes, and a crispy house made hash brown. Their hash browns are so good, you can taste the pieces of potato, nicely seasoned with a crispy exterior.

The lovely oat chia Bircher muesli was recommend to us and it is topped with coconut yoghurt, pistachios, mint, tamarillo and slices of grapefruit and orange.

The menu also has a range of other choices, from Drippy Eggs, or eggs with your choice of sides to a cereal bowl. At lunch, there’s salads, burgers, a grilled mortadella sandwich, crispy skin barramundi or pasta of the day; which on this day was a pigs head sausage casarrece.

Drinks wise, the barista is brewing up a storm. Coffees being made by the second, using 5 senses bean, try it black, with milk, iced or as filter. You can otherwise opt for tea, juice, shakes or even the hard stuff; how about a morning cocktail?

Overall a great cafe and we look forward to returning.
