Coolangatta Estate is a winery in the Shoalhaven region. Coolangatta has a long history and thus they have selected a name which derives from the local Aboriginal dialect, pronounced cullungatti, meaning beautiful view. This is exactly what you’ll find staying in at the property at the top of the mountain.

The Estate is the site of the first European settlement on the South Coast of NSW, Australia. It was originally built by convicts and is now owned by the Bishops, a local family who refurbished the ex-convict village into a hotel and winery. You can take a self guided walk around the site and read about each building and who originally lived and worked in each part. Their website also documents the history.

The grapes are picked by hand and sent to the Hunter, where the wine makers work their magic. The Coolangatta Estate climate is suited to make lighter style wines and mainly whites. Their Semillion is the flagship and is Australia’s most awarded.

The wine tasting itself a great experience, the staff very knowledgeable and enjoy explaining the ins and outs of their range.

The site is very covid safe. You can do your wine tasting or have a bite to eat out in the grass or under a marquee.

Accomodation wise, there are multiple types of rooms to stay, whether it be a cottage or the “stables”. We stayed in one of the cottages. Whilst and older site, we found this to be perfect for our needs. The room had a double bed and two singles, the beds are so so comfortable. The room also has a kitchenette (with microwave, fridge, toaster and kettle), as well as a dining table, couch, cupboard and television. Rooms have AC and bathrooms complete with supplies. Due to covid, rooms weren’t being serviced, but we were able to see reception when we needed more towels or supplies. The site is lovely to walk around, there is a tennis court and pool as well. We think for the price, it is really reasonable and and good place for an escape from the city.

We found staff to be friendly and helpful and doing a great job despite staff shortages.
Plan a weekend escape and check out the understated Shoalhaven region, it’s not far from Sydney or the Gong and there is plenty to see and do, and it is also a great spot for a relaxing escape.
