It was my birthday and I was keen to try out the Sky Bar, part of Shell House – a swanky multi-level venue in Sydney’s CBD.
On the ground floor you can visit the cool and sophisticated Menzies bar which had a super chilled ambiance, fast service and great cocktails. They all looked pretty similar in presentation but the flavours had been infused so well and they tasted really nice.
Walk into the side street and you’ll find the entrance to Shell House. Take Lift to the 9th floor and you walk into a corridor of terracotta hues and Art Deco design. The styling is Uber cool. There is a dining room with exquisite meals. We don’t dine on this occasion as we’re just here to check out the rooftop bar but the menu is certainly one we’re keen on.
We then walk up the internal stairs to the Sky Bar’s 10th floor, the top level or rooftop bar, where you can sit inside or partially outdoors and take in the breathtaking view of the city, and the restored clock tower on the terrace. The architecture and décor is incredible, they’ve kept with the outdoor heritage façade, yet indoors feels very art deco.
Guests are super dressed up and of an older crowd. Staff were interesting, probably a little too cool for us, not as friendly as we ordinarily experience.
We were pretty early, but it was not busy, but we recommend you book, for the day prior, we could not get a spot. We were seated at the bar and order a drink. Kurt was frustrated as their cocktail list have 5 drinks only, and 1 they said they didn’t have. Kurt asked to replace the ingredient they didn’t have and they said they had none of the ingredients which we found odd.
I had an espresso martini which was nice. Since much of the cocktail ingredients were out, we didn’t order anything else.
The venue is cool so worth checking out from a design perspective. Perhaps one day we can try the food.
