Shaffa is a Middle Eastern restaurant, located below street level in Surry hills on a site that once was a church. It feels like an outdoor restaurant with a high glass atrium ceiling and this architecture is a unique and clever arrangement.

Sit at the chef’s bar or in the dining space below the atrium, either way, the atmosphere and ambience is spectacular.

Inspired Middle Eastern foods, the dishes are beautifully presented and packed with flavor. We highly recommend the banquet as it takes the ordering stress away from the dining experience and it has all the favourites. Beginning with a tasty little crispy and fresh bites, were the Israeli Ceviche, Tomatoes, Shallots, Chives, Herbs, Lavash, it was complemented with a rainwater shot / palate cleanser. Interesting is how I’d describe this drink!

Then they brought out some Foccacia with zaatar, straight out of the oven, dipped in the house made Masabacha, Chickpeas (like a hummus) Shivka Relish, Cumin, Paprika, Olive Oil, Parsley.

Next came the Tlv-Style Palamida Crudo Bonito seasoned with a beautiful tangy and slightly spicy made from Salsa Mediterranea, Cherry Tomatoes, Shallots, Chilli, Pistachios. This was super light and delicious, probably my favourite dish on the banquet.

This was followed up by a Shawarma Lafonit Chicken which was like a mini taco, filled with Chopped Salad, Amba-Tahini, Sumac-Onions. This was a great little morsel before the main course.

The main meal, the pièce de résistance was the amazing perfectly cooked Grilled Beef Sirloin. Coooled medium, with a Herb-Panko Crust, Tomatoes & Shallots Salad, it was also a huge serving with 2 plates for a table or 4. This was served with a Chermoula Fire-Roasted Cabbage Garlic Confit, Thyme, Sage, Olive Oil, Cumin. Nicely roasted on the outside and soft interior cabbage.

When you think you’re full, think again, because there’s always a dessert stomach. And here, it’s a must with the Tiramisu, light and fluffy cake made with Mascarpone, Amaro, Arabic Coffee, Cardamom, Savoiardi, and Pistachios.

We could not fault any of the food here and honestly think it’s the perfect banquet and super generous. Don’t forget to order a few drinks too; cocktails are great and they’ve got an extensive wine list. Staff were knowledgeable and efficient – keeping us right to our 2 hour timeslot.

Overall, Shaffa is a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy innovative cuisine in a cozy setting. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s definitely worth stopping
