The Cannery in Rosebery is a destination you need to visit if you are looking for food and beverages around the Rosebery area. The Cannery has it all; quality Cafes, a brewery, a distillery and a number of quality dining establishments.
Hidden inside the Cannery is a relatively new Modern Vietnamese Restaurant called Banh Xeo Bar. It is run by a husband and wife team who originally started the business as a market stall specialising in Banh Xeo (a savoury Vietnamese pancake/crepe). They are integrating traditional Vietnamese cuisine with nose to tail British cooking techniques and boy the food is good.
There are a number of tasty starters which include the ever popular fresh rice paper rolls or tasty little morsels – the pigs head nuggets. Something that cannot be passed on, is the bone marrow with fermented chilli. Spread a combination of the bone marrow and fermented chilli on toasted bread, there is a richness in flavour, you are truly in for a treat.
Of course there are the Banh Xeo in many varieties. A huge serving that overlaps the plate, this crisp folded pancake/crepe is filled with fresh mint, bean sprouts, we had pigs head nuggets as our protein of choice. This is also served with lettuce cups, fill them with a portion of Banh Xeo, fresh mint and a generous pour of the sweet Vietnamese dipping sauce.
The soup dishes have us returning for more. The banh bo hue a slightly spicy soup made from bone broth which has given plenty of time to give this soup a ridiculous amount of flavour. They also do a very good banh rieu. This is a Vietnamese crab cake soup, this soup is a little less common and also very impressive.
Banh Xeo Bar serves a quality Vietnamese cuisine infused with British cooking techniques. It is a little pricey for Vietnamese food, however the food is top notch and it is a local for us. Well worth travelling for, the soup dishes are some of the best we have tried in Sydney.
