Fich at Petersham

Fich has been on our foodie bucket list for a while now. We heard lots of good words about it from plenty of foodie friends who are return customers.

Fich is a casual neighbourhood eatery in Petersham that offers both dine in and takeaway. We visit for dine in but we are observant that the takeaway is doing a roaring trade, and understandably, for they have some pretty decent $10 snack packs in addition to the other takeaway options. I’m sure we’ll get takeaway at some point.

We booked ahead which we recommend, for the restaurant was full on our visit. The restaurant is dimly lit, and the feel of the place is chilled with plenty of people enjoying a wine or two with dinner. We love the fish mural on the wall and the hanging lights which provides a beachy feel to the place.

It’s not your run of the mill fried fish and chips shop, though you can get that, it’s more refined. We had checked out the menu before visiting and were pretty set on what to order, but when we arrived, the specials also caught our eye.

We begin with the crowd favourites; potato scallops and a side of tomato sauce. A thick piece of potato in a crispy batter and these were so good, we could easily have had more.

We order the amazing Portuguese dish, the Cataplana, which comes in a traditional pan and we open the steaming dish filled with Mussels, clams, king prawns, calamari, fish of the day in the Caldeirada broth with capsicum sofrito and mixed with pearl barley. The flavours were well developed and provided a great taste to the seafood. We mopped up any remaining sauce with some Crusty bread.

We also order the daily special which was unreal. A beautiful dish of steamed Dory, seasoned with ginger, green shallots and soy.

The flavour was divine! Perfect with the bowl of steaming rice and the venue was kind enough to steam some veggies too.

Other menu items include a seafood platter, king prawns, tacos, fish popcorn, grilled fish, mussels, calamari, poke bowls and salad. I was originally from planning for a fich burger, so we made a booking to return!

Before departing, we make sure to grab a famous Portuguese tart, which Fich get from supplier Sweet Belem, whose store is around the corner. Great little custard pastries to be demolished in just one mouthful.

The venue also has liquor, and we grab beers (although sadly the grifter on tap was out) but wine is also available.

Staff are very efficient, helpful and provide an overall excellent experience. We look forward to our next visit.
