Chargrill Charlie’s is chain of family owned businesses that has been operating for over 30 years. It’s a huge operation, with multiple venues across Sydney, open 7 days a week. We were excited that Chargrill Chargrill has reopened in its original location of Coogee!
Occupying a large space on the corner of Coogee Bay Road and Brook Street, this store is open for takeaway but there’s also plenty of seats to dine in.
They are always busy, testament to just how good the food is. It’s not just your typical charcoal chicken shop, it is far much more than that with amazing salads, veggies, burgers and desserts and it will have you salivating for more. The food is home cooked style, with the type of food your mum might cook; think lamb shanks, baked fish and roasted veggies. The menu rotates so you can go regularly and be inspired by their options.
From the charcoal grill, their chickens are top notch. They do not have hormone injections and they are beautifully chargrilled, and seasoned with herbs and spices or marinated with Portuguese flavours. The chicken is moist and succulent and pairs perfectly with a salad or veggies. They also have some pretty good chicken schnitzel if you prefer a fried option.
Of course it wouldn’t be the perfect meal without fries. You can get their nicely seasoned French fries chips or their famous hand cut potato wedges or sweet potato wedges. We like them all but the potato wedges are our personal favourite. Plenty of potato and perfectly crispy.
They use the freshest of ingredients and seasonal produce to make their famous salads, made in house everyday. They will suit a range of crowds and we tried the poke salad, roasted cauliflower and also some Greek salad. They definitely have to work hard here to keep up with the demand, these sell out the door like hotcakes.
There’s also hot menu with a lot of choice – from meatballs, cheesy cauliflower to curry to casseroles and Lentils. There’s plenty of roasted veggies or fried rice. This kind of food would also be perfect for an event or catering, which they do also offer. Suitable for your office meeting, picnics or family dinner.
You also can’t go wrong with a burger/ they do have beef burgers, but we opt for a chicken burger, and so glad we did. It’s huge! Charlie’s Chomper has the succulent chicken, bacon, pineapple, lettuce, cheese, onion, Mayo and tomato on a milk bun. They’ve also got the famous chicken rolls and our personal favourite is the old fashioned one.
They have sweets and desserts too, and although we didn’t try, because we were full; the home made apple pie looks like a winner.
When you arrive it may appear slightly overwhelming with so many people trying to get the Chargrill Charlie’s fix. But don’t fret, the service is easy. Take a number and wait your turn, service is extremely fast and always friendly.
They also have an app where you can earn store credit and even purchase Chargrill Charlie’s hoodies, hats and bags to feel like a part of the team.
