Avners has opened up in Surry Hills on Bourke street, only a short stroll from Oxford Street. Occupying a prime corner with ample parking around, you’ll find a great spot serving up bagels and other baked goods that have been all made in store. Think of your favourite Lox Bagels or Pastrami as well as the popular Sabich.

The bench inside faces the main street making bagels and you can see all the work in action. Order at the counter and wait out front while they made the fillings fresh for you.

You can get many bagel variations from plain to poppyseed, cinnamon, chocolate or those with special fillings.

We shared two; the Pastrami – with smoked girello pastrami in a spice crust with sauerkraut and roasted sweet potato, and zhoug, onion and pickle, and the sabich – which features a boiled egg, pickled cabbage, eggplant, herb salsa, hummus, and amba (a sweet mango sauce).

They were certainly super tasty fillings; we both like the Sabich the best. We also agreed that the bagels themselves were probably more dense that we are normally fans of, and the whole thing was possibly a bit smaller than expected. That said all in all, a nice bagel.

They also had a brisket bowl or Matzo soup – I’m very keen to return to try these!
In addition to their bagels, they sell brownies, cakes, babka, different loaves of bread and challah (Fridays only). Coffee is available too, using Little Mariontte for the bean.
